April 2015 Emails
April 7 2015
Well here goes about my week. It was great as usual! Got some funny pictures of my companhera but I do not have permission to send them to you, unfortunately. Maybe after I leave to the field :D
Visas. Sister. Weatherford (my comp) got her flight plans. She is the only one with a visa and she is going to fly out on Monday. She goes from Salt Lake to Atlanta to Sao Paulo and then to Natal. Which will be really cool for her because she will get to see a little of southern Brazil? The other 8 of us are getting our reassignments tomorrow! I can't wait! We all made a bracket see where we would get reassigned to and I’ll send you a picture of mine! You will never guess where it said I would go! WASHINGTON! I know that is not where I am going, but it was still pretty cool! I actually met someone going to the Washington Federal Way mission. We played volleyball together. It was great. But I will let you know as soon as I get where I am going! Elder. Gines said one of us should go to Vegas because that is where he is from and I said I would take one for the team and go there ;) We have this thing, me and Sister. Thacker. She is going to get reassigned to the Tacoma Washington Mission and be stationed in the Lacey 5th ward where she will meet my "sassy" grandma (everyone here wants to meet you grandma!) and then convert CJ and convince him to move to Blue Bell Utah (LOOK IT UP! that is where Sister. Thacker is from and there is nothing there! It’s like a dream life there tho!) And then she said when I get home CJ will be Mormon and we will move to Blue Bell and all live a happy farm life! lol! Isn’t that a great plan? Well, the part about Blue Bell is! There are so many awesome stories I get from her about Blue Bell! I love it already!
The language is a lot better. I find myself talking to my companion more in Portuguese, but I am still far from fluent. It will come with time. Hopefully, I will be able to get down there soon so that I can learn it fast.
I found out all...ALL of the teachers in the Portuguese department are either married, engaged or getting ready to propose. 2 of my teachers have proposed since we have been here and the third, his girlfriend is coming home this week and they are getting married in June. So no luck for me or Ashley. Lol! In the Lords time my friends!
I got my package on Friday and with the persuasion of my district I opened it on Friday. And I am grateful I did because then I could eat all of the candy during conference and as soon as conference started I had NO TIME! Which is the story of my life! But that's okay! A wise grandma of mine told me "free time is overrated" which I guess is true on a mission because none of the time I have here is for myself. Which is a great eye opener? Thank you so much for the scripture Easter eggs. I got to do it with Sister. Thacker and Sister. Weatherford.
Funny things that happened this week:
In language study we were practicing extending commitments to people so to make it personal we were paired up with someone who told us one hardship they have had since they came to the MTC and we were to extend an invitation to them on how they can receive help. Sister. Weatherford and Elder. Gines were partnered together and Elder. Gines did not understand the WHOLE thing and looked at Sister. Weatherford with the straightest face and said "I chew tobacco". Sister. Weatherford asked him if we were serious and he kept his composure not knowing we were supposed to tell about a real struggle we have. Sister. Weatherford kind of freaked out! It was HILARIOUS!
Walking back from gym I hurt my knee and wrist trying not to dive for the volleyball and I was telling Sister. Weatherford "my wrist hurts, my knee hurts..." and this random Elder. walked up and asked in a super cheerful voice "you need a blessing of health?" It was so random we laughed all the way back to nossa residencia.
In class, we were talking about funny names in the bible that are translated into Portuguese. So Mark is Marcos. Which is alright? James is Tiago. Which is funky! And Ruth is pronounced "hoot chi" And Elder. Gines laughed and said "well it's a good thing there isn't a book of Ruth!" ... after a little we told him there was and he didn't believe us so he sang the song with all the books and when he got to Ruth he just stopped and put his head down in disbelief. It was great :P
Not much else has happened differently than all the other weeks. Last week we got to host and this week we get to be traffic hosts. We get walkie talkies which is really exciting because that is the closest thing I will have to a phone. Not for the phone sake but for the ability to communicate with the other companionship that are not next to me. It will be sweet! And we have infield orientation this week. So that will be something.....
General conference was AMAZING! I only fell asleep once in the first session. But we had to sit in the worst uncomfortable chairs for every session instead of watching it in the comfort of our classroom. But the talks were great! I cannot wait to get reassigned hopefully somewhere I can buy an Ensign with the whole conference in it! That would be great!
Depending on where I get me reassignment I am getting ready to send a box to yall! Because there are some things that I don't need. And the post office here said it won't be too much to send things home. Like all the Easter eggs that I don't know what to do with ;) The boondoggle is finished. I did it all in 2 days! But I gave away a couple and Elder. Gomez LOVES his :) and the rubrics cube was such a blessing! If only I could finish it! I can do every layer except the bottom one. I think I will have Elder. Gines teach me today and I’ll write it down so I can always remember!
I also have a lot of pictures and a video that I want to send you but the files are too big. I bore my testimony in Portuguese and can’t send it to you. So if you have any ideas let me know! I'll keep trying different things!

April 9- Reassigment
Hey! So based on the lack of visas at the MTC, my whole district except my companion got reassigned last night! It was a pretty cool experience and now I get an English plaqueta which I am super excited about! But I am nervous to teach in English! I had to do some English teaching last night and it was kind of hard! I see what everyone means because it is sometimes hard not to insert some Portuguese words in there. And most of all it is hard to greet people in English because I do that so much here! Well on to the big news :D
Elder Gines is headed to the Georgia Atlanta Mission to wait for his Brazil Visa for Manouse.
Elder Gomez is on his way to the Nevada Las Vegas Mission.
Elder Rodriguez is on his way also to the Nevada Las Vegas Mission.
Sister Thacker is flying out to the New Mexico Albuquerque Mission with her companion Sister Juarez.
Sister McMakin and Sister Cole are headed to the mission I WANTED TO GO! It won on my bracket we made this week. They are going to the Washington Federal Way Mission!!!! NO WAY RIGHT!?! That is so stinking close to home! I guess its a good thing that I am not going there! It would be way too cool to be called to serve in Mindy's ward or something! Ahhh! If only!
And on Wednesday morning at 3:35 AM I will be departing from the MTC to the airport to the Nevada Las Vegas Mission.
WHAT?????? That is SWEET! nao?
I am super excited! What are the chances? Like NONE! BUT IT IS SO EXCITING! and I know I won't need all those cold clothes! And I get to go with 2 of the funniest elders at the MTC! (kinda sad Elder Gines is not coming with us but he is from Las Vegas...soo)
And Last Sister Weatherford is on her way to Natal Brazil on Monday morning! So from Monday to Wednesday I will not have a companion...IDK what is going to happen then :P
Love you all so much!

LAS VEGAS! It is so hot. But not as hot as Brazil :D (Sorry Sister Weatherford! I miss you a ton!) So I got my visa the day before I came down here so I didnt think I would be down here for very long. Which is kinda what I was hoping for and guess what! When you do something dumb like that the Lord has a way of putting you in your place. So I am going to stay here for a transfer. Another LONG 6 weeks. When we left I had no problem leaving the MTC, but it was a pain to lug around the airport and from the to the trax and all that jaz. But so we made it to the airport and it was raining. But the cool thing was 2 weeks ago when I was a host I hosted a girl going to Las Vegas and she flew down with me. Me and Sister Cook are bros now :) (well i didnt ask her. But I feel like we could be) So we flew down and I sat by myself on the plane. So that happened. And when we got to the airport we were greeted by the Mission presidency and the sister training leaders and the zone leaders. The sister training leaders were so happy i wanted to vomit. Not becase I wasnt happy too. Just because I wasnt feeling the enthusiasm and then they gave me a pass along card to give away. Which I was tired becasue I had woken up at 3 in the morning and the flight had so much turbulance. So I just gave it to myself. NOT THE MISSIONARY THING TO DO I KNOW! But that is the first time I got SICK on a plane ride. DRAMAMINE for the next one.
Well then we got a little time to sleep at the mission home and I found out that I would stay here for a whole transfer! A WHOLE TRANSFER! Are you kidding me! It gets better. THEN I had to say goodbye to Elder Gomez and Elder Rodriguez. Which was hard because they were the last of our MTC district! It was so hard. To say goodbye to everyone in my district and not know when I would be able to see them again. I swear I cry every time. Then we got our companions and I almost cried when I got my new companion because I though of sister weatherford and I knew no one could be as great as her! I miss her so much! But my new companion was meant to be. Her name is Sister Morceli. She is from Sao Paulo. So she is helping me with my Portuguese. Right now we talk only portuguese in the car. oh yeah. So after I got my new companion they handed me keys to the car! WHAT?! not only am I new frim the MTC and was NOT supposed to drive in Brazil, they hand my keys in LAS VEGAS? are they crazy? the answer is yes they are. They didnt have any of my information to let me drive but I drove back to our area which is an hour away from the mission house and we almost got hit 3 times. ALMOST DIED! and the next day my companion told me to drive over there all over again. Then we went straight from the mission house to the Hightowers house for dinner and they were so nice. There is one ward that is really nice and the other one is not so nice. Tudo Bem. But A sign I am in LAs Vegas. 1. Everyone has tattoos. 2. The chapel smells like smoke. 3. I smell like smoke. 4. Everytime I get into the car I almost die.
But the BEST people that I have met! JANET ROSS! She is the most amazing person that I have met in Las Vegas (except brady and his family). She has been investigation for a while but I had my second real lesson with her. (the first was sister rock who was in prison for 6 years I think) (I AM IN THE GETTO OF VEGAS) Here is Janets story. She was at the store one day and someone hit her car. She came out and saw all of the damage and then was freaking out becasue there was a lot of damage. She went into the store to see the videos but they wouldnt give it to her. When she got back into her car she saw a note on the window that told her the lady did not see the car and she was sorry and she would pay for the whole thing. And I guess they worked together and Janet was curious why she did that because normally people dont do that. Well she was Mormon. And Janet started investigating. During my first visit with her we sat down and she told us she was ready to be baptized. AHH! THAT WAS SO COOl! I love Janet so much! If I ever have a bad day or a bad contact I just think of Janet. I left my camera at home but I will send you a picture next week. And last night we went to a fireside with Janet is was called Why I believe. And it is with converts that share their stories. They were amazing and GUESS WHO SPOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ELDER GOMEZ!!!! He made me cry! Well everytime he bares his testimony he makes me cry! I am so happy for his sister! :D But after that was over GUESS WHO ELSE I SAW! JENNA BELL! I mean Sister Bell! And it was so hard to say goodbye to her. it always is! But at the why I believe fireside Janet (MY INVESTICATOR) went and talked to Elder Gomez and made us all cry. And then she gave Elder Gomez a hug. It was funny because she didnt know he wasnt supposed to give him a hug. All mormons hug :P (Elder GOmez: we told her in the car that she wasnt supposed to and some words slipped her mouth and she was so sorry so have hugged you! But I am kinda glad she did :) I hope you felt the love from all of us)
And we are visiting Sherry and AJ who are amazing! AJ has such a strong testimony of the Restored Gospel, but Sherry has strong social associations with anoter church. But they are going to pray about a baptism date. And hopefully get coming to church. They have a little girl named Hannah.
Not much else happened this week. I know that even though I want to go to the strip and to Brady's house that I am not on a vacation. I am here to teach the Gospel. And it is HARD BECAUSE WE VACATION HERE! I see the hotels we stayed in last time we were here and it is hard to think I cant take my comp to the m&m factory. Thats the hardest part. And my appetite is off. I don't know if it is from the heat or from the change. But hopefully I will eat better soon. (you will never guess this! I ate shrimp the second night here! I got sick after but i ate it. so that happened)
Day 2 here was really hard. It was really sad, and That night I was so depressed. But its good now because day three I met Janet. So whenever something bad happened I think of Janet.
Well that is all I can remember of this week! I am literally living from email to email. A mission is really the hardest thing that I have ever done in my life. Thank you for everyone who as helped me come this far! Cant wait to see you when I get home.

Still no news on when I am leaving SinCity. But do I have the stories to tell you this week! So over this week I have met an abundance of people. Half of them were blessings and the other half are just kind of there.
Monday night I met my first prostitute. That was that story.
Tuesday was exchanges and I am not going to lie. I was kind of dreading them because I was just getting used to my new companion and now we were going to do exchanges. FOR REAL? Well the Lord has a way of shoving those thoughts right back at you because I saw more miracles that Tuesday than I have seen on my whole mission. It was a real game changer for me! And Sister Krous is amazing! (butchered her name right there) We met people right and left. It was really cool. But the coolest part was a referal from the mission office that said "Anna balh blah blah called the Las Vegas Nevada mission. She asked how she can become a member of the church" WHAT?!?!
Then Wednesday was boreing. So was every day until Sunday. Then Me and Sister MOrceli kinda had a HUGE DISAGREEMENT. And we had to sit down for a long time and talk/yell it out. It was bad. But hopefully this will all work out in the end. So yeah. we will see. I actualy JUST got a text from my Mission PResident and I am leaving on the 18th of May. WOW! That is going to come so fast! (or at least I hope it will)
Then Sunday night. we were out in our apartment complex and this man we set up an appointment with (who may or may not have been drunk at the time we set up the appointment) was definatly drunk during our visit. So we talked to him and were trying to get out of his house, and he kept telling us not to do drugs and that Satin is afraid of him because of his faith and all this stuff. Finally when we told him we were going to pray and leave he said she had to pray to his bible. And he set his bible up the the flower vase right in front of her so she could pray to it. And then when we were walking out the door he asked if we were going to come back and we said if he would come to church on Sunday. But then he said he could only come to church if we could give him a ride.
Then Right after the previous encounter we walked across the street and in an attempt to talk to everyone we bumped into another drnk man, who was getting out of his car. (SCARY) But even worse he had an exacto knife in his hand. And we gave him a card, but he said the only way he would listen to our message is if WE were the ones that came back every time. He was really creepy. And then he started jabbing the knife at us. I think he forgot it was in his hand or something but it was scary enough that we got out of there real fast!
And now we are here. Monday. My favorite time on monday because I can talk to my family. THIS IS WHAT I LIVE FOR! Let me tell you! Haha!
But the scripture that really stood out to me this week is Alma 26:3. It really is a blessing to be an instrument in the Lords Hands. And I know that all of the work we are doing here is through him. Especially Janet. She is here because the Lord put her here with us and I am eternally grateful that he did!
